1915 Construction 7141 Sherbrooke St. West

Title

1915 Construction 7141 Sherbrooke St. West

Description

In 1913 the newly appointed rector, Thomas MacMahon, S.J., engaged architects, Peden, McLaren and Walter Murray, Associate to complete plans for the proposed new campus. Equally important, if not more difficult, he had to persuade skeptical parents to send their sons to that remote and thinly populated farm area. Gavin, p19
John C. Coffee, S.J., was appointed by Father MacMahon to supervise the planning and construction of the buildings on the fifty acres of land on the north side of Sherbrooke St. Work began on September 23, 1913. Construction was disrupted in 1914 by the outbreak of the Great War, but within two years, on October 1, 1915, twenty-one senior students moved to the new Loyola College, occupying the lower part of the Administration Building. The Junior and Refectory buildings, which were still under construction, would not be completed until the summer of 1916. Gavin, p.19-20
